Writing Your Own Vows: Do You?

Everything about your wedding day, from your choice of Arizona wedding venue to your décor, music and beyond,  is meant to be a perfect mix of your unique personal style and the traditional wedding elements that make a wedding….well….a wedding. However, when it comes to wedding vows, it appears that people are generally divided over the best way to incorporate this very important part of the ceremony. After all, the traditional wedding vows were written for and during time periods when marriage truly was forever, because, forever wasn’t really that long considering the time space of people that lived in the early centuries of humanity.

Moreover, traditional wedding vows don’t take into account modern-day marital pressures. It’s not about living with and loving someone through sickness and health these days as much as it is living with and loving someone despite the presence of several ex-girlfriends on a Facebook profile or taking them through the better or worse of an Internet addiction. It might take exchanging vows between a wife that is the breadwinner and a stay-at-home dad. All of the old bets are off and many people believe wedding vows should reflect these new times in which we live.

More important than even your choice of Arizona wedding venue, writing your own vows is a deep and personal commitment to the person you are saying “I do” to and not some generic version of words that say you are going to be there. It is a good way to pledge yourself to your betrothed in a way that reflects who you are as a couple. Yes, other elements of your ceremony, such as the dress and your Arizona wedding venue, are important aspects of your big day. But you won’t regret taking the time to sit down and write your own vows. Speak from your heart, say the things you’ve always thought too mushy for even the sappiest of Valentine’s Day cards and let your own words carry you into your marriage. The old vows were great for the old days of marriage; however, in today’s world, where standing apart from the crowd means everything, you are distinguishing yourself and your mate from the pack as well by saying what you want to tie you to one another forever. This means you are off to a perfect start distinguishing yourselves as a lasting couple that stands the test of time as well.
