How Facebook Can Give You The Greatest Wedding Ever!

This morning I came across a post on TheKnot.com titled “5 Ways Facebook Can Ruin Your Wedding.” It is incredibly ironic timing being that on the Val Vista Lakes Facebook Page we are literally giving you the wedding of your dreams, for free! I mean, how can Facebook ruin a wedding when we’re using Facebook as a tool to give away a free wedding package valued at over $2,500! However, using Facebook as an instrument to plan, invite, and celebrate your wedding can be amazing, as in our specific case, or disastrous. Here are some do’s and don’ts for using Facebook for your wedding.

Facebook Wedding Do’s

1. Enter Wedding Contests!! Of course this is the most important detail to remember when planning your wedding with Facebook. Our Val Vista Lakes Facebook Page is a perfect example of how you can win a free wedding, just by entering a Facebook contest. But we aren’t the only ones. There are hundreds of wedding vendors on Facebook who are always willing to offer free services via contests.

2. Get Free Advice – Follow every local vendor and national wedding resource on Facebook for all of the hot topics, trends, and DIY tips. You can plan your entire wedding with all of the free advice that these vendors offer through their Facebook Pages. At Val Vista Lakes, we are consistently providing wedding tips and advice through our blog and Facebook Page.

3. Ask Questions – Facebook is a social medium, so use it as such. If you have wedding dress questions, color ideas, DIY issues, or anything else that is plaguing your mind, ask a local expert or vendor on Facebook. For example, let’s say that you are deciding between two wedding dresses that you have just fallen in love with. You can’t decide, so you take two photos and post them on Facebook. You ask your friends, family, and the wedding dress experts which dress you should wear. While you don’t have to decide solely based on their advice, a little expert help from local wedding vendors can definitely help you come to a decision.

Facebook Wedding Don’ts

1. Announce Your Engagement Early – One of the biggest mistakes that young couples make is to announce their engagement to family members on Facebook. Of course you’re excited, and you can’t wait to take a picture of that ring and post it all over Facebook for everyone to see. However, if you fail to call your mom, dad, sister or best friend before posting your engagement announcement you will have done more than hurt feelings, you will have greatly disappointed those close to you. Do what’s right, call your family and close friends before posting that engagement ring photo.

2. Facebook Event Invites – Another huge mistake that many young, Facebook savvy couples make is to create a public Facebook event with their wedding date. By creating this public event, everyone can see it, even those who are not getting an actual invitation. This is a quick way to hurt feelings and break hearts. Everyone understands that weddings are expensive and you can’t invite all of your friends and family. But by posting an event invite you are throwing it in their faces.

3. Comments – If you post photos of your ring, engagement photos or wedding photos you are opening yourself up to criticism from ‘snarky’ friends, as TheKnot states. There will always be those friends and family who just will never be happy for you, so you must expect those comments to come at some time. Don’t respond to those kinds of comments and don’t delete them. By completely ignoring the comment and moving on, you will make yourself look like the bigger, happier and more mature individual and everyone will truly know that no one is brining you down.
