Do you want to make your wedding memorable? If so, deviation from some social and wedding norms may be required. For example, I would say at least 50% of weddings that I have been to have featured the song “At Last” covered by Etta James. That is just fine if you are a traditionalist and don’t care to use your imagination on the first dance as a married couple.

Outside of the State, people commonly associate Arizona with two things: extreme heat and those soaring Saguaro Cacti. What most people don’t realize is Arizona is a fantastic place to get married.

Last Thursday evening, I took one of my good friends from the MBA program I am in for celebratory food and drinks before sending him off to get married. His wedding is taking place in Wisconsin, so unfortunately I could not attend. After class, we went over to a local restaurant in Tempe, Arizona and started celebrating. During the evening’s conversation, another guy in the the MBA program asked how much he needed to spend on an engagement ring in preparation for asking his long-time girlfriend to marry him. Various answers came from around the table: “3 month’s salary”, “1 month’s salary”, “$10,000” and “$4,000-$6000.” After this conversation, I began to ask myself “what exactly is the appropriate amount to spend on an engagement ring in these tough economic times?”

My second best man speech came 5 years later. It was a beautiful Arizona wedding in Cave Creek, AZ. The wedding ceremony came after it had rained all day and the sun began to peek out behind the clouds. Anyone who has witnessed this in Arizona should feel lucky. The sky was alive with a vibrant orange-pink hue. I once again did the primary job of calming down the groom and holding on to the wedding rings. After the wedding, I once again knew I was an hour way from the best man’s speech. This time, perhaps due to being older and wiser or the sheer embarrassment I endured at the first wedding, I came prepared. I researched who the bride’s favorite authors were and found a wonderful quote about love to put into my speech. Additionally, typed out numerous versions and had my wife give them each a read.

In my 27 years on this planet, I have been to various weddings. They have ranged from a simple legal arrangement in a local courthouse all the way to an extravagant out of state wedding in Santa Barbara, California. However, one common thread unifies all weddings; the Best Man speech. Having personally been the Best Man in 2 weddings as well as the dozen or so other weddings I have attended has allowed me to compile a do’s and don’ts for that all important moment at the reception.

How do you ask your wedding party to be a part of your special Arizona wedding ceremony? The basic way is just to simply ask, telling your friend that you’d truly appreciate them being a part of your celebration. An extra plus is that you can tell them why. More often now, brides are finding a way to ask their bridesmaids in unique and memorable ways that show how grateful they would be for the offer to be accepted.

Traditionally, the bridal wedding party consisted of close friends and family that would help the bride and groom prepare for the big day - and keep them calm on the big day!
